Despidido, President Barreiros!

A picture of me in front of a mural of my family

This week was great!   We found many people to teach.  Patrick committed to be baptized in July! He is one cool dude.

Our mission president is leaving this week.   :(   He is super awesome.   It was very hard to say goodbye.  His wife, Hermana Barreiros, is also super cool.

They banned bicycles in the mission but they didn't say anything about exercise bikes!
The night Chile won Copa America was crazy! We thought they had lost until we were in bed trying to go to sleep.  When it went down to penalty kicks, we figured out what was happening by the sounds we could hear. When Chile won, the entire city came alive! I couldn't get to sleep until like after midnight.

The Calera Crew!

So I wanted to write about this weird experience we had with a member.  He and his wife are both returned missionaries, and tried to give us suggestions about missionary work.  Here is some information I thought I'd pass along to any member families who read this:

  • Please do your best to have lunch and/or dinner ready when the missionaries get there because we only have an hour to eat.
  • If we offer to help, please don't be offended.
  • Missionaries are here to baptize people the Lord has prepared, not "plant seeds".
  • Preparing people for the missionaries is the job of the MEMBERS!!!!

Yo y Elder Clark, un hombre muy extraño pero muy bueno
It was a very delicious lunch, nonetheless.

Woo Hoo!

So here's a quick update on the life of Elder Hale:

President Barreiros is leaving next week.  He is super awesome. I'm sad he is leaving. He is pretty funny and he has the thickest Brazilian accent I've ever heard.  I only just figured out how to understand him a few months ago. Haha!

We taught a guy named Patrick this week. He has been to church like four weeks and wants to be baptized. He has his doubts though, because he struggles with peer pressure (he is in college). But, he is awesome.  We were going to try filling out his entire baptismal form in the first lesson and become legends, but we didn't know he was struggling with the Word of Wisdom. Everyone in the ward says he's a sure baptism in the next month!

We tried making cookies today. Elder Goodrich thinks that 50 ml is half a liter. We didn't make cookies today.

Guillermina is progressing faster than any new member I've ever seen! She talks all the time about how awesome she thinks Nephi is.  Haha! We gave her a notebook with essential gospel doctrine and she's been filling it! (with questions for us, too. Hahaha!)

Love you guys!

We Baptized Guillermina This Week!

Guillermina is one of the most wonderful converts I have ever seen.  She is SOOO excited to learn more. Her son baptized her! He had to do it twice because he rushed through it and missed a few words. Guillermina keeps telling the members she had to be baptized twice because she had extra sins.

The day she was baptized was the greatest day of my life. The members are ecstatic; it has been a long time since the ward has seen a baptism. Even in our tiny ward of about 70 active members we had tons of people there for the baptism.

We had to clean out the dirty font three times before we could fill it.

Also, we had three more investigators in the church this week. We found a family of six. Not all of them could come, but they are wonderful as well.

Thanks for all the love and prayers!

Maestro de la Cinta

We found donuts!

Myth busted: Donuts do exist in Chile.

This week was fun - lol

Love you, Mom!

Editor's Note:  So this was the email we received this morning.  As you can imagine, we were a bit disappointed.  Like, frustrated, disgruntled, I-think-I'm-calling-the-Mission-President  kind of disappointed.  Like, why-didn't-you-at-least-sent-a-picture-of-the-stinkin'-donut disappointed!  Thankfully, we received a part two.  And a couple of photos. But not of the donut.

Maestro de la Cinta
Sorry, Mom, for that mean joke. Here is my real email.

Hey, Boys and Girls!

This week was cool.  We finally got one of our recent converts to come to church.  It was great.  I asked the mission president for help and he said, "Ningun investigador va a asistir si ellos no están leyendo en el Libro de Mormón y orando primero."  So we invited them to pray and read (the Book of Mormon) as a family one time, and they came to church the next day!  Cool.

Unfortunately, none of our investigators came to church, because they're flakey. Except for Guillermina. She didn't come because she's a sweet old lady and it was cold as the dickens yesterday.

The Missionary Planner!
So, our zone leaders in Calera de Tango are both assistants to the mission president right now. One of them went on divisions with Elder Goodrich and me.  He gave us the Elder Peterson challenge -which is to fill out a baptismal form in a first lesson and then baptize them (after they have had all the lessons and their pre-baptismal interview). We are gonna try it with this Peruvian guy named Patrick.  He's come to church twice and he is not even an official investigator. We didn't even know him or invite him before he showed up to church.

We found this never before seen photo of Nathan
last night on an SD card in an old camera
Love you guys,
